The state of Gujarat is the major contributor of salt; about 70-80% of the salt produced in the country is produced in Gujarat from which 30% of salt is coming from the LRK.

Agariyas are the traditional salt-making community in Little Rann of Kutch. who comes from backward community OBC category. One Agariya shack will be kilometres away from another. who do hardwork in desert at 40 to 45 degrees temperature during day time for 10 months to make organic salt.

Salt farming is more expensive for which they have to take loans from money lenders; and they sell their salt to big companies at the less rates, that barely cover their expenses. Still, they feel that this independent business is better than working as labourers by relocating to far away from their villages when the desert is inundated by sea water.
