About Wild Ass Sanctuary
Wild Ass Sanctuary is located in the Little Rann of Kutch, Gujarat, India. The LRK is spread across 4953 sq. km. In 1972, the LRK was declared a wildlife sanctuary, home to endangered Asiatic Wild Asses.other species of mammals are also there chinkara(Indian gazelle), two types of fox (Indian and Desert), jackals, caracals (African lynx), blue bull, Indian wolves, blackbucks, and striped hyenas.
Indian wild ass
Indian Wild Ass (Khur) belonging to Asiatic Wild Ass (locally known as ‘GHUDKHUR’). Asiatic Wild Ass (EQUUS HEMIONUS KHUR) or “Ghudkhur” is now found only in the Little Rann of Kutch of Gujarat State. Breeding season foals can be seen with the herds around October and November.
Blue bull (Nilgai)
The nilgai or blue bull is the largest Asian antelope and is ubiquitous across the northern Indian subcontinent. The animals band together in three distinct kinds of groups Nilgai prefer areas with short bushes and scattered trees in scrub forests and grassy plains. They can be found common in dense forest.
Flamingos
Every year, lakhs of flamingos arrive in search food and for breeding at LRK. After the flamingos had laid their eggs, the water in this particular breeding site. The flamingos need salt encrusted damp mud to build nests. Also, the place where the nest is built has to isolated and inaccessible to human and predatory intervention along with having sufficient food. LRK is one of the largest and most popular breeding grounds for the Lesser Flamingos in the world.
